The UK-based Heliocentrics, an innovative ensemble led by Malcolm Catto and Jake Ferguson, have garnered acclaim for their genre-fusing sound, blending funk, jazz, electronica, psychedelic, and world musics, and collaborating with artists like Mulatu Astatke and DJ Shadow. On the other side of the Atlantic, LA-based DJ/producer Gaslamp Killer (GLK), real name William Bensussen, is known for his unconventional mix of library music, psychedelic rock, hip-hop, rare Middle-Eastern and Indian grooves, and breakbeats. In 2009, Stonesthrow asked GLK to record a mix for the emerging Heliocentrics, leading to a partnership that saw the Heliocentrics touring as GLK’s backing band, and culminating in a collaborative album recorded at Quartermass Sound Lab. The album showcases both the Heliocentrics’ genre-blending talents and GLK’s innovative use of rare and eclectic sounds.
